New Software: Digital Jyotish 1.0 and Astrodamus 1.0

I am in the privileged position of receiving the latest astrological programs when they are first released. This serves you -- my readers -- because you are alerted to new programs, and it serves the companies, because I am happy to give them both free expert advice and feedback on their programs as well as public notice.

I recently received two new unique programs, Digital Jyotish 1.0 by AstroIQ and Astrodamus 1.0 by Nostradamus Corp.

Digital Jyotish 1.0 is a Vedic program that is quite well developed and includes a full range of Vedic functions and some neat unique features. For example, when you point to a planet in its Visual Aspects screen it actually shows (on a North or South Indian chart) what houses and planets are aspected (for Parashari, Jaimini, Tajika, or Western aspects). This is a great visual learning tool for beginners. Similarly, on the Yogas screen, as you click on each yoga, it shows which planets and houses comprise the yoga. Even on the Predictive Techniques screen, clicking on any date will highlight the planets that contribute to the event in the outer ring around the natal chart.

More impressive are the planetary remedies offered by the program, including planetary mantras (chants) and yantras (images). You can see the Sanskrit and transliterations and actually hear the proper mantras for each of the planets, and for all of the planets. You can also read about which gems are best for each planet, and when to begin activities to propitiate each planet.
Digital Jyotish offers a very impressive set of visual predictive screens, including timetables of bindus for each planet and totals, kakshas, nakshatra changes (and latta), vedhas and murti, lunar phases, 23 dasha systems, 4 types of progressions, and a beautiful biwheel showing the transiting or progressed planets around the natal chart.

The program also offers extensive tools for Varshaphal (Solar Return) analysis, including yogas, dasas, sahams, monthly and daily charts, a tripataki diagram, as well as tools for Muhurta (electional), Prashna (horary) work, and Compatibility.

Finally, Digital Jyotish includes the first Astro*Carto*Graphy mapping of any Vedic program, and ironically does a better job with its mapping tool than most Western programs! By pointing to any location, you can instantly see the chart, the shad bala graph, the sarvaashtakavarga for each house, a full ashtakavarga table, and the ascendant and M.C. positions for the location! This is truly an excellent design!

While I cannot give a full review of Digital Jyotish at this time, I'm impressed by the beauty and functionality of each of the screens, and look forward to the program's continued evolution.

Astrodamus 1.0 is an equally unique piece of software. It undertakes to rectify one's birthtime by using major life events to determine the exact time of birth. It then allows you to check the accuracy of the rectified time by looking at the themes for any individual year of your life, to see if they correlate with what actually happened.

Astrodamus is very well designed, and offers not only an excellent set of rectification tools, but also delineations for your natal chart, including your basic personality, likely and unlikely health themes, marital themes, a financial timetable (e.g. what your financial position is likely to be at each period of your life), and more. It includes a module that helps you find the best times to be fertile and to have a child of a specific gender.

It also offers analysis of the themes of any year or any date, and can display a variety of charts and tables, including special points (Arabic Parts for specific themes), uniquely detailed midpoint tables, fixed star tables, important fixed star conjunctions and oppositions, arc directions, a graphic ephemeris, Ghlan directions, harmonic charts, and will even show a planetary return chart and a biwheel with the return chart around the natal chart at the push of a button.

Clearly, Astrodamus' greatest strengths are in its rectification and natal, yearly, and daily analysis tools. I look forward to exploring this program more thoroughly.

Companies that won't send me software to review

It always perplexes me when a company, in an effort to force me to purchase their software, refuses to send me a review copy.

It is sad to say, but I have seen such companies eventually languish for lack of exposure.

Virtually every company who has had a program reviewed by me has appreciated the increased sales and good press the review brings to them.

Additionally, I often help companies improve their programs. For example, I helped AstroDatabank add a Vedic research module to their software, designed chart pages later used in Win*Star, alerted several companies to very serious bugs in their software, and made important -- and later implemented -- suggestions for new features to more companies than I can list.

I love helping the creators of astrology software to make better programs, and help anyone who is willing to listen to my suggestions.

How to Avoid Computer Crashes

As I learn more and more about Windows XP, and Windows in general, I discover more ways to avoid computer crashes.

First of all, read my mention of Anti-Crash Pro, which will intercept and help you recover from 95% of the crashes your computer has, by clicking here.

Next, read my complete Mountain Astrologer article on the benefits of upgrading to a new Windows XP computer, as well as the few problems you might encounter doing so -- and how to avoid them, by clicking here.

Finally, make sure that your system is properly configured. You should set your power-saving options using Windows' Control Panel, not using your computer's BIOS settings (if your computer BIOS power saving settings are enabled, then disable them).

Many programs will crash if the hard drive goes into sleep mode, so you should change the (power-saving) setting in Windows for the hard drive which says "turn off hard disks" to Never. Also make sure that any system utilities you use, e.g. firewalls, virus-protectors, etc. are updated regularly to keep you protected, and that you are using the latest versions. With the proper attention, you can arrive at a computer system that almost never crashes.

What Computer, Printer, and Monitor are best for running Astrology Software?

For my article in the Mountain Astrologer, I've updated the specifications for a computer system for astrology.
