My Mountain Astrologer Review of Käla 2016

Ernst Wilhelm, the author of the Windows based Vedic astrology software Kala, has just released his latest version of the software. Ernst continues to develop unique approaches to Jyotish, and his software makes it possible to use his techniques easily.

One of the important enhancements is the completion of the time-change atlas. 50 countries have been added, so that the program now covers the entire World. Many new Ayanamshas have also been added, including the true Chitra and the Ardra/Galactic Plane Ayanamsha.

The Transit Predictive module is one of the major innovations. Employing both graha and rasi aspects and transits-to-transits, it finds all of the transits for a range of dates for both the birth chart and many Varga charts.

When transits happen on the same day or adjacent days in the D-1, D-60, D-40, and the D-chart representing the theme in question, e.g. the D-9 for marriage, a major event is likely to happen. This module can also be used for rectification, using major life events, moving the birth time forward or backwards by specific increments of time.

A major addition to the Animated Transits screen, in the Gochara report, is a set of interpretations from Yavana Jataka, I.e. the effects of the position of every transiting planet from every other planet and the Lagna. E.g. Saturn transits will show trends for 2 ½ years. The report shows a + sign when there's a positive effect on a life theme.

Both the Animated Transits screen and the Progressed screen can now depict Graha, Rasi, and Tajika aspects and Trines for both transit-to-natal and transit-to-transit points, show Bhava cusp degrees in the natal chart (so you can see exact transits to cusps), and adjust the time by many time increments including the newly added 10- minute intervals.

Another new feature is the Grahas in houses from themselves table. When you get several transiting planets in the same house from themselves, it triggers that house's themes. If the planets have many bindus, the results are improved.

Kala 2016 introduces four more Jaimini dasas: svakendra, niryana, tara arkamsha, and sva dasas.

On a Bhava Chalita chart, a click will give you a table showing all of the deities for all of the Varga cusps. And the ShodasaVarga Deities printout shows the deities plus dignity and Baladi and Jagradadi Avasthas for all of the Vargas.

The Avasthas Calculated screen now allows users to switch between Shad Bala, Vimshopak, and a combination of Shad Bala, Jagradadi, and Baladi Avasthas in calculating each planet's capacity for fulfillment.

Working Jyotishis often need access to all of the Varga charts without leaving the screen they are working on, so the new ShodasaVarga pop-up display will be quite valuable. It can be called up from any screen.

Another innovation is the Mutual Agenda Table, which shows what houses each planet represents in each Varga. By comparing the houses represented by both Dasa and Bhukti lords, one can see what themes will be most likely to be activated during their periods.

Teachers will enjoy the North and South Indian chart module, which can display up to two different charts in South Indian plus a Dasa listing and three North Indian charts on the same screen.

Those using the program will also enjoy being able to easily move from one screen to the next, using the up and down arrow keys to show 9 important screens.

One of Ernst's favorite quick method of prediction, which has just been added to the program, is called the Cards of Truth. It uses playing card symbols to enable fast and accurate predictions. He has a website called cardsoftruth.com where he offers courses to study this tool.

Ernst has thoughtfully provided a YouTube video demonstrating the 2016 advances, too.

While Kala 2016's improvements of preexisting features and many additional capabilities will be of most value to Ernst's students, Jyotishis eager to explore his new and classical approaches will also appreciate the new update.

My Mountain Astrologer review of Käla 2013

Käla is an incredibly inventive Vedic astrology program that features screens designed for a variety of astrological purposes. Since the last time I reviewed Käla in the June 2006 issue of The Mountain Astrologer, the program has had three additional upgrades (in 2008, 2010, and 2013).

In the updates since my last review (before the current update), many new functions have been introduced, including a Sudarshana Chakra screen that includes the Chakra wheel with transiting planets and the Sudarshana dasas, an expanded atlas, many more calculation options, more dasa methods (e.g. the Kälachakra and Manduk Dasas),and many new tables like Jaimini's Dvitiya Prana and Yogada Raja Yogas, dignities of the planets in the 16 Shodasa Vargas, and Hadda Dasa for Varshaphala. Also added were interpretations of the 144 bhava yogas as well as searching for longevity and spirituality yogas.

Käla 2013 offers four new major screens that will be of great use to astrologers. Many have asked for a Progressions screen that shows an animated biwheel of the progressed planets around the natal chart with aspect lines, with many options including the ability to choose Graha, Rasi, or Tajika aspects (or all of them), the Jamna, Chandra, or Aries lagna, and the rate of animation.

You can step forward or backwards in time one increment (minute, hour, day, week, month, or year) at a time, or animate the wheel. This screen can use Solar Arc, Secondary, or Tertiary progressions (progressing the M.C. by one of four methods), and shows the positions of the progressed planets in one table, and the Sarva Ashtaka and Bhinna Ashtaka Vargas, Kakshas, and Taras in a second table. Never has a Vedic program had such a rich progressed display.

The second major screen is called Yoga Judgment, and it displays a birth chart and many invaluable tables that enable astrologers to determine which yogas will give the best (or worst) results by evaluating the strength of each of the yoga-forming planets via their Ishta, Subha Phala and Dig Bala and the (both + and -) strength of the contact between the yoga-forming planets. Another table on the screen shows the strength of the positive and negative effect of each planet upon the house cusps. With this tool, Jyotishis will not only d be able to see which yogas will most profoundly affect a person in which areas of life (houses), and which yoga-forming planet's dasa will trigger the yoga results. Brilliant!

The third new screen is called Avasthas Calculated, and it replaces the earlier Bhava Chalita Screen in Käla. It's tables show the strength of each planet, and its ability to produce outcomes, via its Shad Bala, and its Baalaadi, Jagradaadi, and Lajjitaadi Avasthas. A pop-up table enables you to see which houses will be most impacted by each planet. Besides the birth chart, you can also see both charts and Avastha tables for any three Varga charts at a time.

The final innovation is the SarvatoBhadra Chakra. This diagram can be used in both natal and transit analysis, to uncover hidden relationships between planets based upon their Nakshatra positions. The added Paksha Phala allows one to assess the transits for two weeks at a time, and the Dina Phala for each day at a time, stepping easily forward or backwards in time. The Muhurta Phala allows you to examine any particular date and time to see what colors that moment. Käla 2013 also provides brief interpretations for the Dimbha Chakra, and the Sani Chakra.

The new version of Käla also has a significantly updated atlas (especially for the U.S.S.R.), the ability to print to PDF files, the ability to include asteroids in charts, and two more customizable screens.

The author of Käla has created dozens of video courses on Vedic astrology and specifically how to use the new screens. These can be accessed (for a fee of $30/month) at www.astrology-videos.com.

Käla continues to evolve in leaps and bounds, and is filled with unique screens and tables unavailable anywhere else. It provides a wealth of tools for Jyotishis, both students and advanced practitioners.

P.s. I've added a sample of the Kuta (compatibility) report from Käla here.

Käla 2013

Käla 2013 was released last year as a major upgrade to an already powerful Vedic astrology program. I have just completed my in-depth review of its features, which will appear in the next Mountain Astrologer magazine. I invite you to read it there.

For the time being, here is the list of the new features of Käla 2013 with additional notes from me:

Languages

French interface has been added.

Yoga Judgment

This is a new screen in Käla that replaces the Parashara Screen in the old version of Käla. It calculates a planet's favorable and unfavorable influences as per the Ishta & Kashta chapter in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra using Ishta, Subha Phala and Dig Bala. Extensive and interactive tables provide the mathematical values to analyze any yoga precisely.

This is a powerful tool for ascertaining the relative impact of each of the yoga-forming planets, and the houses that will be most affected.

Avasthas Calculated

This is a new screen in Käla that replaces the Bhava Chalita Screen in the old version of Käla. It calculates all the planets Avasthas from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra's chapter on Avasthas. Extensive and interactive tables provide the mathematical values to analyze the concrete effects of the Bhavas.

SarvatoBhadra Chakra

Calculates and displays the Chakra, Transits to the Chakra, Paksha Phala, Dina Phala and Muhurta Phala

You can step forward or backwards a day or month at a time, or choose a specific dates and time (Muhurta) to use for the Chakra.

Dimba Caakra with results

This is a very handy nakshatra diagram that lets you see some fundamental things about the person.

Sani Chakra with results

Residential Strength

I have found the Käla 2013 update to be very substantial and worthwhile.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Käla 2010

Käla 2010 is now available! There are many new features in Käla 2010 including color options. The majority of the update revolves around the atlas and time zone functions. We have converted Käla to use time zone functions instead of time zone tables as the tables have expired. Rather than putting new tables in every ten years, we have written functions that will work for as long as a country follows their current rules. The DST tables in Käla 2008 will expire between October 2010 and April 2011, so it is necessary to get the upgrade by then or else DST will not be calculated for all those countries that follow DST from 2011 onward. Other upgrades include:

Yogada Table

A table showing Jaimini’s Yogada Raja Yogas due to the Bhava, Hora and Ghatika Lagnas and the 1st and 7th Bhavas. These yogas are the key to predicting level of success and such things as elections. There is a free class on my website www.vedic-astrology.net illustrating the method, which is covered in much more depth in my Jaimini courses as well.

New node option

Käla offers the traditional True and Mean node calculations. Additionally a new node option is offered: Interpolated True Node as conceived by Astrologer, Astronomer and Sanskrit Scholar Dieter Koch. The concept of the Interpolated True Node is that in the conventional True Node calculation the nodes are really only true twice a month, at the times that the Moon crosses the ecliptic. In-between these times the positions are completely hypothetical. Thus instead of follow the true node hypothesis, the node is interpolated between the true node passages of when the Moon crosses the ecliptic. This has the advantage of removing the direct motion of Rahu and Ketu and perhaps providing a more precise position of the nodes – research over the next couple of years will determine if indeed this new calculation is more accurate. This differs from the Mean Node calculation in that with the Mean Node calculation the Moon may be exactly conjunct a node but not have 0 latitude.

Bhava Chalita Screen

You can now select the two vargas that come up on the Bhava Chalita Screen and Käla will memorize them. So rather than the Rasi and Navamsa coming up every time you go to the Bhava Chalita Screen, any two charts you select will come up along with their associated planetary values.

Jaimini Screen

The Jaimini Screen now has a customizable window and we have also added Jaimini’s Dvitiya Prana, or second strength. We have also added Manduk Dasa.

Color Options

You can now select the color for each individual planet, charts and tables. Also the customizable windows are not outlined in a different color so that it is easier to remember which windows are changeable.

Combustion Options

There are now options to determine combustion in the contemporary method of using zodiacal degrees or the Siddhanta method of using observational degrees as propounded by Varaha Mihira and the Surya Siddhanta.

Upagrahas

Upagraha positions are now also calculated for the Vargas and not just the Rasi.

Aspects

A table of planetary aspects to Bhava Chalita cusps is not included along with the standard aspects to equal Bhavas which has always been part of Käla.

Upapada

Upapada is now shown in the Pada chart for all Vargas. (Upapada method is that of Ernst Wilhelm’s Jaimini translation.)

Dignities in Vargas

A new table has been added which shows the dignities of the planets in the 16 ShodasaVargas.

Bhava Chalita Cusps

Bhava Chalita Cusps can now be seen in all Vargas

Minor Upgrades

Keyboard shortcut now included to close charts (Alt+F C)

Käla will now check if you entered a 2 digit year that you actually mean 10 AD if you put in 10 and not 1910.

New Dasa year of 360 tithis as per request of some users.

Mathematical Astrology

The Tables in the Bhava Chalita Screen and Parashara Vargas Screen have all been simplified and improved for greater ease of use and accuracy.

ATLAS UPGRADES

Armenia, Georgia, Moldova, Monaco, Lithuania and Isle of Man added to the Atlas

Käla 2008

Ernst Wilhelm has just (9/1/2008) released the latest version of his flagship program Käla . With each upgrade, Käla becomes more and more powerful, and able to meet the needs of many Vedic astrologers. The upgrade is very inexpensive, just $30 for the downloaded version, or $35 to receive an upgrade CD.

When you first install Käla 2008, the program guides you step-by-step to configure its settings to your liking. This is a great feature (and it can be run again later, if you want to change any settings).

The new Sudarshana page is very well-designed. It has three concentric rings (click here to see an example ). The outer ring shows the Sun as the First house, the middle ring shows the Moon as the First house, and the inner ring shows the Lagna as the First house. Each ring is divided into two sections: the inner section shows the planets at birth, colored blue, and the outer section shows the positions of the transiting planets (each with its own color). One can navigate to four levels of Sudarshana dasa, with dates (and times) selectable. You can also quickly move forward or backward by a year at a time. Also included on the page is a Bhava chart.

The new Bhava Chalita page displays a Bhava wheel that enables jyotishis to easily see when planets are near house cusps and house boundaries. To see a sample, click here. It also has a table of bhava strengths, the influence on house cusps for any divisional chart, a detailed Shad Bala table based upon the Bhava chart, and Vimshottari and Chart dasa tables. I particularly like some of the pop up tables (that appear when clicking on charts). When clicking on the Bhava chart, a remarkable screen-wide table appears showing the precise Bhava house cusps for 16 divisional charts, plus the cuspal nakshatras and their lords and sub-lords down to 5 levels for each bhava of the Bhava chart.

Käla 2008 now calculates several additional dasa systems, specifically the Kälachakra dasa, and the three Mula dasas: Pinda, Naisaraga, and Amsa dasas. You can now also calculate Nakshatra dasas from any graha.

Another unique new feature is a listing based upon planetary ages, useful for prediction, with each age subdivided into 12 periods, one for each Rasi. You can also view a listing of the Antardasas of Rasis, for all the Nakshtra dasas (such as VImshottari and Shodasottari) as well as on the three Mula dasas. The Antardasas will be numbered 1-12, indicating the house from the dasa lord.

Many of Käla's previous screens are improved upon in the update. The Varshaphala page offers a Hadda Dasa listing, more Sahams (the Vedic equivalent to Arabic Lots) displayed in an incredibly detailed pop up information screen, three methods of timing of Sahams based on the distance of the Saham lord from the Saham, exact Tajika aspects and more.

A very nice addition to the Muhurta Helper is the ability to see what factors contribute to the score of any time period chosen by the program. This can enable users to evaluate each Muhurta more carefully.

The program adds to its already well-written modern interpretations of Vedic factors a new section on the 144 bhava yogas (i.e. the meaning of each house lord by the house it occupies) which are very literal translations from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra.

Käla 2008 has additional countries in its atlas, Ayurdaya calculations for longevity, Tajika aspect lines drawn in Varshaphala and Bhava charts, and more.

Afficionados of Käla will be delighted with this upgrade, and newcomers to Käla will find a great deal to appreciate and use.
